How do I Setup and Configure my imKey Hardware Wallet on the imToken App?
When it comes to protecting and securing my Nervos CKB, I use the imKey hardware wallet. There are lots of wallets you can use, but I prefer imKey to store my Nervos CKB.
imKey is a hardware cold wallet with a built-in security chip, which is certified by the CC EAL 6+ security level. The security chip has a built-in true random number generator, which can create wallets/restore wallets offline (disconnected from the network), thereby saving the private key directly stored in the security chip; it is isolated from the network environment storage and very secure.
Let's continue the series by now discussing imToken's hardware wallet called imKey.
Now we will walk through how to setup and configure your imKey hardware wallet. Power on the wallet by pressing the power button on the far left.
Power on the imKey device. Next, choose your language.
Choose your language. Set and Confirm your pin code.
Do NOT forget your pin code. If you forget your pin code, you will have to reset your device.
You are now ready to Create your Wallet as shown below:
Select with the arrows Create Wallet and click OK. You will be prompted to write down your Mnemonic phrase. Write it down very carefully.
The mnemonic is your backup. Do not lose this phrase and keep it off network. This will ensure you do not compromise your funds.
Click Next or the down button and confirm you understand this is your backup. Next, begin to write down the 12 Mnemonic words. The BIP39 English protocol has a total of 2048 words that can be used. BIP39 is an open source located at this following address:
It will walk you through the unique words for your backup.
Once you have them written down, click the OK button and you can now confirm all 12 words. Click Ok. It will randomly ask you to confirm words. If you choose the incorrect word, a flashing x appears. Once complete, it will take 2 minutes to create your wallet.
Let's now pair the hardware wallet (Cold) to imToken. Open imToken from Android or iOS. Click the 3 lines on the top-left and choose Pairing to imKey hardware wallet.
Hold the imKey wallet close to your mobile phone. It will detect the device and you can choose Connect Devices. A pairing code will appear on your imKey hardware wallet. Input that code on your phone when it asks and click Pair.
Next, you must enter the binding code which binds your imKey to your imToken wallet. The binding code appears on the hardware wallet. Backup your binding code as you will need it if you ever have to restore your wallet. It is an 8 character code.
NOTE: The binding code is used if you ever have to reinstall imToken and rebind your imKey hardware wallet to your imToken app. If you ever reset your wallet, a new binding code will be generated. The binding code is also used for imKey manager software to update your firmware.
Once complete, you now have a successfully paired imKey (cold) wallet to imToken app.
You can see the difference between your hot and cold wallet. If it says imKey (above), you know you are working with your cold wallet. You can switch between wallets by select the 3 lines at the top-left hand corner.
Accessing Nervos CKB on your Hardware Wallet
Open imToken app and select the 3 lines on the top-left hand corner. Select imKey | Eth.
Select the Browser icon on the bottom and in the dApp url, type Portal Wallet. The Portal wallet appears and is binded to the hardware wallets Ethereum address. In our next post, we will send some small funds to the hardware wallet and go over the recover wallet and reset wallet process to ensure you do not ever lose your Nervos CKB investment. Finally, We will also go over how the physical confirmation works on the device.
NOTE: Before you send any significant funds to your hardware wallet, you always send a small test amount and test the restore process. Once you have confirmed you can restore, you can send all of your funds.
